Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
  • ¾ cup chopped onions
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 16 ounces canned tomato paste
  • 15 ounces canned tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons dried parsley flakes
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 2 ½ teaspoons salt (divided)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 cups ricotta cheese (or cottage cheese, if preferred)
  • 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese (divided)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¾ pound shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 pound lasagna noodles (regular or no-boil)

Directions / How to Cook

  • In a deep pan, cook ground beef, Italian sausage, chopped onions, and garlic over medium heat until the meat is browned and onions are soft.
  • Drain excess grease, then stir in tomato paste, tomato sauce, parsley, basil, 1 teaspoon salt, and sugar. Simmer the sauce on low heat for at least 1 hour (the longer it simmers, the richer the flavor).
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, ½ cup Parmesan cheese, oregano, and remaining salt. Stir until smooth.
  • To assemble: spread a thin layer of meat sauce at the bottom of the baking dish. Add a layer of lasagna noodles, then spread some ricotta mixture, followed by mozzarella cheese. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a top layer of mozzarella and Parmesan.
  • Cover the dish with foil (spray the inside of the foil to prevent sticking). Bake for 45–60 minutes, until bubbling and hot.
  • For a golden, crispy top, remove the foil and broil for 3–5 minutes until cheese is lightly browned.
  • Let the lasagna rest for 10–15 minutes before slicing and serving.
