Ingredients
- 30 slices white bread, lightly toasted
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2 stalks celery, finely chopped
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 2 tablespoons water (optional)
- 2 teaspoons rubbed sage
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and ground black pepper, to taste
Directions
- Lay the toasted bread slices on baking sheets and let them sit at room temperature for 24 hours until fully dried.
- Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Crush the dried bread slices into crumbs using a rolling pin, then transfer them to a large bowl.
- Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and celery, cooking until soft, about 5–7 minutes. Remove from heat and drain.
- Stir the chicken broth and eggs into the bread crumbs, mixing until moist but not soggy. Add water if needed.
- Mix in the cooked vegetables, sage, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- Press the stuffing mixture into the prepared baking dish.
- Bake for 1 hour, or until the top is golden brown and crisp.
- Serve warm.
