Ingredients
For the Dough:
- 1 cup warm milk (115°F)
- 2 ½ teaspoons instant dry yeast
- 2 large eggs (room temperature)
- ⅓ cup salted butter (softened or melted, not hot)
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 ½ cups bread flour (divided)
For the Filling:
- ½ cup salted butter (softened)
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons cinnamon
- ½ cup heavy cream (for pouring over unbaked rolls)
For the Frosting:
- 6 ounces cream cheese (softened)
- ⅓ cup salted butter (softened)
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- ½ tablespoon maple extract (or vanilla extract)
Directions
- Warm the milk to 115°F and sprinkle yeast on top. Let it sit for 3–4 minutes until it becomes slightly frothy.
- Add eggs, butter, and sugar to the milk mixture, then mix until well combined.
- Add salt and 4 cups of flour, mixing gently until just combined. Let the mixture rest for 5 minutes.
- Switch to a dough hook and knead for 5–7 minutes, adding up to ½ cup more flour if needed. The dough should be elastic and slightly tacky.
- Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm spot until nearly doubled in size (about 30 minutes).
- In a separate bowl, combine butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon to make the filling.
- Once the dough has risen, turn it out onto a floured surface and roll it into a 24×15-inch rectangle.
- Spread the cinnamon filling evenly over the dough.
- Roll the dough tightly from the long edge and cut it into 12 even rolls using a serrated knife or unflavored dental floss.
- Arrange rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking pan. Cover and let rise for another 20 minutes while preheating the oven to 375°F.
- Warm the heavy cream slightly and pour it over the unbaked rolls.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through. If they brown too quickly, cover loosely with foil.
- While rolls cool, beat together cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and extract until smooth.
- Spread the frosting over the warm or cooled rolls before serving.
