Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water (110°F / 45°C)
  • ⅔ cup white sugar
  • 1 ½ tablespoons active dry yeast
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 6 cups bread flour

Directions

  • In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water. Stir in the yeast and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until creamy and foamy.
  • Add oil and salt to the yeast mixture.
  • Mix in the flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat all sides. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm spot until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  • Punch the dough down and knead for a few minutes.
  • Divide the dough in half and shape into loaves.
  • Place each loaf into a greased 9×5-inch pan. Cover and let rise until the dough is about 1 inch above the pan (about 30 minutes).
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Bake the loaves for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Remove from pans and cool on wire racks before slicing.
