Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (250g)
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, very cold (85g)
- ¾ cup whole milk (177ml) — buttermilk or 2% milk can also be used
Directions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
- Grate the cold butter or cut it into small pieces, then add it to the flour mixture. Stir until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
- Pour in milk and stir gently with a spatula or wooden spoon until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Place the dough on a floured surface and bring it together by folding it over itself 5–6 times to create flaky layers.
- Gently flatten the dough to about 1 inch thick with your hands (avoid using a rolling pin).
- Cut out biscuits using a floured 2¾-inch cutter and place them on the baking sheet, about ½ inch apart.
- Re-roll the remaining dough if needed to make more biscuits.
- Bake for about 12 minutes or until tops are lightly golden brown.
- For extra flavor, brush the warm biscuits with melted butter right after baking.
